Please have snow... and mistletoe...
Post Christmas Doldroms (is that really a word?)
"UGH!" (Kevin irritatedly flips off the radio as Christmas Shoes starts to play.) "Why are so many stupid Christmas songs depressing?... Sarah, why?" (Oh, he was asking me, I thought he was talking out loud and I was bitter that he turned the radio off... we only get 4 weeks of Christmas music - good, bad, depresssing, uplifting, I'll take what I can get - I am a Christmas Music addict.)
Why he asked me, I am not sure. But, it is quite possible that I could someday be deemed the Christmas music prophet - there really is not one Christmas song I do not know (though there are quite a few I do not like). From Dominick the Donkey (hee haw, hee haw) to I Want a Hippopotomus for Christmas (only a hippopotamus will do) to I Wish I Had a River (so I could skate away) to the I-agree-its-quite-horrible Christmas Shoes... I know them and have heard every version from every artist - Karen Carpenter to Jessica Simpson. And from Thanksgiving to Christmas, I pretty much listen to either the Christmas playlist on my iPod or 93.3FM, a local station that plays non-stop holiday tunes. I am obsessed with, or even sick for, Christmas music. So, I suppose I can see why Kevin would turn to me with this inquiry. I am pretty much the Christmas Music Guru... thank. you. very. much!
"And that River-skate song... I know you love it and all - I just don't understand why she wants a river to skate away... that is not very HOLIDAY SPIRIT-ISH." (Kevin continues to ponder the depressing Christmas song thought.)
So - I attempted to bring it home for him.
"I can't really explain why some of the songs are depressing - only to be cliche and cheesy by saying that Christmas is a time to be with family and a time to be thankful for what we have, friends, family, health, etc. So - obviously, we are not all so fortnuate and for many, Christmas opens wounds remembering those that are no longer with us or are separated from us. What is supposed to be so festive and joyous can be so painful for those people. We have pretty much the epitome of a perfect life - a healthy relationship, a beautiful network of friends and family, great jobs, etc... so of course, it is hard for us to empathize with those that are not so fortunate... for us, Christmas is the best - we get to spoil the crap out of each other, be gluttonous with cookies and turkeys and hams and booze... and surround ourselves with people we love."
"Yea, I suppose. I just think that playing depressing holiday music only feeds to their sadness..."
Touche. But - such is the world we live in... the world is spun by monopolies who control what we listen to and when.
I did have an amazing holiday season. I was looking forward to it immensely and it lived up to all of my anticipation... the only problem now... I am said it is over... and dude... 6 months until SUMMER. EM EFF.
